Time for Cherry Pie and Coffee – PARTS 3 & 4

Twin Peaks The Return is now 4 episodes in! Join us as we recap and discusss all the twists and turns in Parts 3 and 4. We’re also starting to formulate our thoughts about what might be going on. We’re already revisiting our earlier ideas, revising some and forgetting others (Richard Chamberlain, ahem). Theories abound about The Secret History of Twin Peaks and its mysterious dossier, non-linear storytelling, Hawk’s connection to the mission, gaming imagery, the glass box, and the blue rose. We’ve spent far too much time this week freeze-framing episodes and annotating the annotations in TSHOTP. It’s packed into a concise 2h40m and will likely all be proven nonsense by the next episode. Let us know what you think about these ideas by getting in touch on Twitter, Facebook, or in the comments below.

Contains spoilers for Parts 1-4, Seasons 1 & 2, The Secret History of Twin Peaks and FWWM.

Time for Cherry Pie and Coffee – PARTS 1 & 2

Twin Peaks is officially back! Having watched The Return Parts 1 and 2, we sat down to record to our thoughts, feelings and theories whilst in the daze and wonder of experiencing our first new screen Peaks in a very long time. It was overwhelming and we ended up with this beast of an episode… At time of recording we still haven’t seen Parts 3 and 4 and are being very careful to avoid spoilers so in the next episode, we are almost likely to have been proven completely wrong about everything that we say here. We need coffee now. Contains spoilers for Parts 1 and 2.

Time for Cherry Pie and Coffee!

Twin Peaks is returning! We’ve been getting fired up about it for a while (it featured heavily in Episode 3) and we thought about how we could incorporate the show into our regular Time for Cakes and Ale episodes over the coming months. We couldn’t really make it work without Twin Peaks taking over the podcast… so instead we have decided to start a sister stream of episodes: Time for Cherry Pie and Coffee. … Continue reading

Episode 16 – Guardians of the Galaxy, the universe and everything!

With the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, we invited film buff Dave Riley on to chat about the movie. Several cakes, and ales later, we had rambled on about the Marvel Universe, The Dark Tower trailer (Dave is a huuuge fan!), what comics should be adapted on screen, what old properties could be refreshed, and an unnecessary amount about Tango & Cash. We’ve edited our musings into this beast of an episode. Also features a guest background appearance from the pizza delivery guy and a special message for some bloke called Ian at the end.

Short form speculative fiction and where to find it

To follow up on our recent podcast about short fiction in SF&F (Episode 15),  we’ve put together a list of some of the sources of speculative fiction that we have encountered. This is not a list of authors of short fiction, but rather the places where one might look to get a feel for genre (short) fiction. Some were mentioned in the episode and several listeners told us that they would like some more information. We have added details for both specific magazines we follow,  and publishers whose catalogue covers an array of formats or perhaps publish genre fiction as part of a broader catalogue. There is occasionally overlap between entries. Click the names of each item to jump to their website and find out more.

This is not meant to be an exhaustive list, but rather the sources we have followed for some time to get the ball rolling. We constantly are looking for new things so we will continually update this post. Maybe you’ve got some recommendations for a magazine we haven’t listed or a publisher you’ve seen consistently produce speculative short fiction. Maybe you’ve been published somewhere and want to give them a plug! We’ve only put a few things on the list so far but we would be especially keen to get some recommendations and a short blurb (not just names!) for magazines, online fiction, flash fiction, and resources for specialist subgenres. If you have comments or suggestions for additions to this list, please get in touch via Twitter or in the comments below. … Continue reading
